Mizoram Civil Society Takes Bold Stand to Protect Voter List Amid Intense Refugee Crisis
In response to an influx of over 42,000 refugees from Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Manipur, Mizoram’s leading civil society group, the Young Mizo Association (CYMA), is actively working to safeguard the integrity of the state’s electoral process. With the commencement of Mizoram’s special summary revision of the voter list, CYMA has embarked on a mission to verify that only legitimate residents are included in the registry.
The central committee of CYMA initiated this measure amid reports of escalating refugee numbers due to crises in neighboring regions. A representative from CYMA emphasized the critical need to uphold the sanctity of the voter list, underscoring the importance of this initiative for preserving Mizoram’s democratic systems.
Issued on Thursday, CYMA’s directives to its state-wide branches emphasized vigilance in monitoring the voter registration process. Members were instructed to report any instances of non-domicile or foreign nationals being erroneously added to the voter rolls. The organization stressed these efforts are vital for protecting the electoral rights of true Mizoram residents.
According to the latest draft voter list released on Tuesday, Mizoram currently has about 8.58 lakh voters, with women comprising 4.42 lakh. This heightened scrutiny by CYMA comes in the backdrop of significant refugee arrivals, many fleeing political unrest in their native countries.
The refugee crisis began gaining momentum after the 2021 military coup in Myanmar’s Chin state, prompting many to seek refuge in Mizoram. Likewise, people from Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts migrated following a 2022 military crackdown on ethnic insurgents. Additionally, ethnic conflicts between Kuki and Meitei communities in Manipur since May last year have increased refugee numbers.
Meanwhile, the Mizoram government is addressing the needs of disadvantaged families not covered by the National Food Security Act by issuing special ration cards.
These actions reflect Mizoram’s dual focus on maintaining electoral integrity while addressing humanitarian challenges.
