Setback in Hopeful Assam-Meghalaya Border Talks: Progress Hits a Frustrating Stall
The ongoing interstate border dispute between Assam and Meghalaya has stalled, as progress in the second phase seems slow. Although the two state governments had initially shown commitment to resolving the conflict, they are now facing challenges moving forward. Paul Lyngdoh, the Tourism Minister of Meghalaya and Chairman of the West Khasi Hills Regional Border Committee, expressed frustration regarding the lack of communication from Assam’s side. Despite initial positive exchanges of documents and a scheduled visit to the disputed areas planned for winter 2024, Assam’s lukewarm response has left the situation unresolved.
Lyngdoh emphasized that the final report from the regional committee relies heavily on their visit to the affected areas, which has become a significant obstacle due to the lack of cooperation from Assam. The second phase of border talks aims to address six remaining disputed areas. However, progress has dwindled after a key leaders’ meeting in August 2022.
The stalling negotiations raise concerns about the commitment of both governments toward a peaceful resolution. As these talks lose momentum, the hopes for a timely resolution remain uncertain.
