Empowering Peace: MP Jamir’s Bold Stand Against AFSPA in Nagaland
Nagaland’s sole Lok Sabha MP, S Supongmeren Jamir, has voiced opposition to the continuation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in the state, citing the ongoing ceasefire and peace process between the central government and Naga underground groups. Speaking at the 78th Foundation Day of the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), Jamir emphasized that the prevailing conditions have rendered AFSPA unnecessary in Nagaland. The event highlighted NSF’s role as a key youth and student organization representing Naga communities across Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, and Nagaland, as well as in parts of Myanmar.
Jamir noted that five Naga national political groups have maintained a ceasefire with the central government since 1997, with ongoing negotiations aimed at resolving the longstanding conflict. Despite the government’s recent six-month extension of AFSPA in eight Nagaland districts, he urged current leaders to oppose the Act and advocate for its repeal to the central administration. He also encouraged senior NSF leaders to remain committed to the welfare of the Naga people.
NSF President Medovi Rhi, in his address, celebrated the organization’s enduring legacy of unity and resilience, underscoring its historical role as a symbol of hope and a voice for Naga rights. Since its establishment in 1945, the NSF has been pivotal in championing the collective strength and aspirations of the Naga people.
As Nagaland navigates its complex socio-political landscape, the discourse on AFSPA reflects broader themes of autonomy and self-determination for the region. Jamir’s call for action against AFSPA resonates with the NSF’s mission, aligning with its historic commitment to Naga rights and identity. The continued advocacy by Naga leaders and organizations like the NSF remains crucial in shaping the future trajectory of peace and governance in the region.
