Mizoram’s Heartfelt Move: Government Bans Firecrackers and Sky Lanterns for a Safer, Serene Christmas and New Year
Mizoram Home Minister K Sapdanga has announced the state government’s decision to prohibit the use of firecrackers and sky lanterns during the upcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations, aiming to curtail pollution levels. This announcement was made during an event at the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) party office. Sapdanga emphasized that stringent measures would be applied to individuals involved in the transportation and use of fireworks.
To enforce the ban and ensure peaceful festivities, the government plans to alert all police units statewide. This includes conducting night patrols in both urban and rural areas to maintain order during the celebrations. Sapdanga stressed that the collaborative effort with civil society organizations will further aid in maintaining a serene environment throughout the festive season.
This is not the first time Mizoram has implemented such restrictions. The state has previously banned firecrackers, sky lanterns, and other pyrotechnic materials, including toy guns, during festive periods. These measures have historically aimed to reduce pollution and uphold the sanctity associated with both Christmas and New Year celebrations.
With these steps, the Mizoram government reiterates its commitment to promoting an eco-friendly and peaceful festive atmosphere, reinforcing efforts to keep traditions untainted by pollution. Sapdanga’s announcement is the latest in a series of proactive efforts by the state to balance celebration with environmental responsibility.
