Discover the Vibrant Spirit of Meghalaya: Celebrate Indigenous Roots at Na Thymmei Festival
The Na Thymmei Festival, deeply entrenched in a 125-year legacy, recently turned Shillong’s historic Madan Weiking grounds into a vivid celebration of Meghalaya’s indigenous culture on October 26 and 27. This vibrant event originates from 1899, when the organizing body Seng Khasi Kmie was founded to safeguard and celebrate local traditions.
Translating to “From the Root,” Na Thymmei is a dynamic cultural gathering that highlights the richness of local heritage through traditional dances, music, and theatre over two days. The festival features performances by both traditional artists and contemporary local performers, creating a lively showcase of Meghalaya’s cultural tapestry. Workshops led by Khasi community elders delve into ancestral practices, while stalls offering indigenous cuisine allow attendees to savor regional delicacies.
Inaugurated in 2022 with backing from Meghalaya’s Tourism Department, the festival has rapidly become a prominent event at Madan Weiking, a venue that also hosts the renowned spring festival, Shad Suk Mynsiem.
The festival’s significance was underscored by the presence of key government officials, including Cyril V Darlong Diengdoh, Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, and Swapnil Tembe, Director of School Education and Literacy. Their attendance highlighted the event’s cultural and economic importance to the region.
A notable highlight of the festival was a traditional pageant contest, crowning Samuel Shylla as U Nai Khatsawsynia and Phibahunshisha Ryngkhun as Ka Lukhimai, celebrating traditional beauty and attire. Additionally, a children’s fashion show further showcased the traditional clothing of the region.
Beyond its cultural offerings, the Na Thymmei Festival serves as a significant economic platform, benefiting local artisans and performers. It plays a crucial role in preserving traditional crafts and ensuring their continuity for future generations. This festival not only entertains but also empowers the local community, strengthening their cultural roots while offering them new economic opportunities.
