Unraveling the Truth: UDP’s Passionate Call for CBI Investigation into Multi-Crore Road Scam Shocks the Nation
SHILLONG, Oct 26: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has expressed support for a demand to involve the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in examining the multi-crore road construction scam. This echoes an earlier demand by the Congress party for CBI intervention in the case.
UDP General Secretary Jemino Mawthoh emphasized the necessity of an inquiry to achieve a logical understanding of the issues hampering the project. He stressed that large public investments intended to benefit the community must adhere to established guidelines, making a thorough investigation imperative to address any discrepancies.
Mawthoh underscored the importance of adhering to proper implementation practices, regardless of whether the funding originates from central or state government sources. He acknowledged that the state government has already initiated measures to tackle the problem, as suggested by media reports. However, he insisted that reaching a definitive conclusion is crucial due to the involvement of public funds and public welfare.
Highlighting the broader implications, Mawthoh insisted that any scheme failing to adhere to guidelines or resulting in poor execution requires scrutiny, with accountability enforced for those at fault. He emphasized the need for vigilance in ensuring project integrity.
Previously, Congress MLA and Opposition Chief Whip Ronnie V Lyngdoh cautioned that this investigation might only reveal a fraction of the issue, suggesting other road projects warrant similar scrutiny.
An FIR has been filed naming nine individuals, including senior state engineers and officials from two private companies in Telangana and Haryana. The road project, linking Shillong to Tura via Nongstoin and Rongjeng, was initially sanctioned in 2010 as part of the central government’s Special Road Development Programme for the Northeast. The cost, originally pegged at Rs 1,303.83 crore, escalated to Rs 2,366.77 crore following multiple revisions, with the completion deadline originally set for 2014.
