Heartfelt Outcry: Junior Doctors Intensify Protests, Spreading Hope and Action Across Rural Bengal
Kolkata, Oct 27: The West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front (WBJDF), spearheading protests following the rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata, plans to expand its movement into rural areas of the state. “Our movement will persist until the investigation into the rape and murder reaches a logical conclusion and our demands are fully met. It will no longer be confined to metros and district headquarters but will extend to remote rural regions,” stated Debasish Halder, a prominent leader of the protest.
In the meantime, a rival group, the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Association (WBJDA), has been established by junior doctors recently suspended from RG Kar Medical College for allegedly fostering a “threat culture.” Halder criticized the formation of the WBJDA, suggesting the group is politically backed. He questioned the credibility of an association led by those accused of intimidation tactics.
Tensions rose as a WBJDA-affiliated doctor served a legal notice to Aniket Mahato, a principal figure in the protest against the atrocity, following his remarks in a meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Mahato had labeled the suspended doctors as criminals, prompting legal action from one of them.
The WBJDA members assert they are victims of coercion by those leading the protest against the crime. Despite their suspension by the college council, a single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court recently stayed this resolution, indicating that only the state government has the jurisdiction to decide on such suspensions.
As the agitation persists, the state’s judicial and political landscapes are closely intertwined with the unfolding struggle, underscoring ongoing tensions within the medical community over issues of safety, justice, and alleged political influence.
This development marks a significant turning point in the ongoing strife, capturing widespread attention as the doctors continue their fight for justice and reform.
