Tragic Clash: Northeast Insurgents Battling Myanmar Militants Leaves 3 Manipur Rebels Dead
Imphal: A deadly altercation erupted on Wednesday morning between Myanmar insurgents and Manipur rebels near the Indo-Burma border, resulting in the deaths of three prominent leaders from two insurgent groups in India’s conflict-torn northeastern region.
The violent encounter was part of a joint operation by several northeastern Indian insurgent groups against Kuki rebels in Myanmar, as confirmed by a statement from N Ningsingba, assistant secretary of the People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak-Progressive (PREPAK-PRO).
Tragically, the clash claimed the lives of Oinam Gulu, alias Babu, who led the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), the armed division of the Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF); Wahengbam Saratkumar alias Sopaiba, a self-styled captain with PREPAK-PRO; and Nongmaithem Bonisana alias Nongdol, a self-styled Lance Corporal from PREPAK-PRO.
The statement conveyed profound grief over the loss of these leaders and included a gesture of respect with a two-minute silence. Furthermore, it criticized the call for a separate Kukiland, emphasizing the importance of maintaining Manipur’s territorial integrity.
Reports suggest that the gunfight occurred near Manipur’s Ukhrul district early Wednesday, involving insurgent groups and opposing forces, notably the Kuki National Army-Burma (KNA-B) and People’s Defence Force (PDF). While the exact number of casualties remains unverified, local media hinted at a potential toll of at least six deaths.
This grim episode highlights the persistent conflict and instability along the porous India-Myanmar border. The ongoing strife underscores the complex dynamics and deep-rooted tensions plaguing the region, contributing to a cycle of violence that continues to impact lives profoundly.
