Chaos Unleashed: Bengaluru’s Torrential Downpour Causes Severe Waterlogging with More Menacing Showers Ahead
Heavy rains and thunderstorms have severely affected Bengaluru, causing significant disruptions in the city. Over 20 flights to the Bengaluru airport faced delays or diversions on Monday night, with Air India and Indigo flights rerouted to Chennai due to adverse weather, particularly impacting the northern parts of the city like Yelahanka and Sahakar Nagar. Continuous downpours for three days have led to waterlogging in low-lying areas, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert and forecast more rain.
Karnataka’s Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated on Tuesday that the government is monitoring the situation and promised compensation for rain-related damages. Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda visited the flood-affected Tatanagar Badrappa Layout. Criticism came from the Janata Dal (Secular), which highlighted infrastructure issues like hazardous roads.
Schools, Anganwadi centers, and higher education institutions were preemptively closed on Monday as a safety measure. The civic body, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), advised residents to stay indoors if possible. Social media featured multiple posts highlighting the inundation of roads and underpasses, emphasizing the severity of the situation. The unusual occurrence of morning thunderstorms in October was noted by climate scientist Pradeep, with some areas experiencing rainfall exceeding 60mm.
