Modifiable factors include obesity, high-fat diets, lack of childbirth, contraceptive pill usage, and alcohol consumption, while non-modifiable factors encompass gender, age, hereditary cancer, early menarche, and later menopause, as explained by Dr. Shiveta Razdan, a consultant in Breast Oncology.
Hazardous habits, such as smoking and alcohol intake, can increase the risk by 30-50%. Long-term use of hormonal contraceptives also poses increased risks and may affect fertility. Despite rising awareness and early detection improvements, many young women lack access to necessary screening services. In contrast to Western countries with an early detection rate of 80%, India’s rate is only 40%, often resulting in complicated treatments and poorer outcomes. Standard treatment strategies for young patients include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and hormonal therapies.
Experts recommend proactive prevention strategies, including regular self-examinations, mammograms starting at 35-40 years, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle featuring breastfeeding and daily exercise. Early intervention and awareness campaigns are crucial to address this growing issue. The situation underscores the urgent need for expanded screening programs and comprehensive care to combat the increasing prevalence of breast cancer in younger women, as emphasized by the medical community.
