Miraculous Recovery: Rela Hospital Triumphantly Transforms 18-Year-Old Girl’s Life with Life-Saving Lung Transplant
Rela Hospital successfully performed a bilateral lung transplant on 18-year-old Shanmugapriya from Thoothukudi, who was suffering from post-tuberculosis bilateral bronchiectasis. This condition, resulting from a previous TB infection, severely damaged her bronchial tubes and left her reliant on increasing oxygen support for years. Initially managed with medication, her condition deteriorated significantly, necessitating continuous oxygen therapy and frequent hospital admissions, severely impacting her daily life.
The donor lungs, sourced from a brain-dead individual in Thanjavur, were transported to Rela Hospital within two hours and 20 minutes. The intricate transplant surgery lasted approximately four hours and was spearheaded by Srinath Vijayasekaran, director of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Heart and Lung Transplantation. This surgical success was attributed to the collaborative efforts of the multidisciplinary team and support from the Tamil Nadu government. Mohamed Rela, Chairman of Rela Hospital, acknowledged the donor’s family during a press meet.
Post-surgery, Shanmugapriya spent a week in the ICU followed by two weeks in the general ward. She is currently on the path to recovery, with doctors optimistic about significant improvement following a month of specialized care and nutrition. Published – October 21, 2024, the event marks a significant milestone in the field of transplant pulmonology at Rela Hospital.
