Revolutionizing Guwahati’s Future: Gaurav Gogoi Demands Comprehensive Consultations for Transformative Infrastructure Projects
Assam Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has called for broader stakeholder consultations before the Assam government proceeds with significant infrastructure projects. This appeal follows Gogoi’s letter to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in September, where he expressed concerns over Guwahati’s heritage, biodiversity, and green cover being threatened by new developments.
Central to Gogoi’s concerns is the proposed 5.44 km flyover from Noonmati to Dighalipukhuri, believed to impact the city’s social and environmental fabric negatively. Gogoi echoed the worries of citizens, environmentalists, and civil groups, highlighting the potential loss of heritage and biodiversity. He underscored the need for an environmental impact assessment to evaluate the implications on air quality and public health, particularly affecting children and the elderly.
In addition to the flyover project, Gogoi addressed issues with paused infrastructure initiatives. The Jorhat-Majuli bridge work is stalled due to a dispute between contractors, delaying progress and leaving local contractors unpaid, causing dissatisfaction among stakeholders. Gogoi has sought official clarification on the status of this project and the steps being taken to resolve the issues.
He also voiced apprehension about a proposed flyover on AT Road, Jorhat, citing potential adverse effects on the local economy. This area, a traditional market hub, faces disruptions from the construction, likely displacing many shopkeepers and exacerbating traffic chaos due to establishments beneath the flyover.
Gogoi urged that development should not come at the cost of natural resources and community well-being. As dialogue continues, he emphasized the importance of balancing infrastructure progress with environmental sustainability and public welfare.
