Iran’s Supreme Leader Vows Unyielding Revenge: Hamas Leader’s Death Strengthens ‘Axis of Resistance’
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, addressed a gathering in Tehran on September 25, 2024, following the death of a key Hamas leader, Yahya Sinwar. Khamenei’s remarks, reported by the Office of the Iranian Supreme Leader through Reuters, underscored that Sinwar’s demise would not disrupt the progress of the “Axis of Resistance,” affirming that the resistance front continues its course despite losing prominent figures. He stated, “Hamas is alive and will remain alive.”
Sinwar, instrumental in orchestrating Hamas’ assault on Israel on October 7, 2023, which consequently instigated the ongoing conflict in Gaza, was killed in a confrontation with Israeli forces after being the target of a year-long pursuit. His death was publicly confirmed on Thursday. Khamenei eulogized Sinwar, acknowledging his resilience and efforts in the fight against adversaries, describing him as “a shining face of resistance and struggle,” commending his role in inflicting a historic blow to the enemy on October 7.
The “Axis of Resistance” comprises groups supported by Iran over the years, including Hamas, Lebanon’s Hezbollah, the Houthi movement in Yemen, and various Shi’ite groups in Iraq and Syria. These factions identify themselves as opposition to Israeli and U.S. presence in the Middle East. Khamenei reiterated Iran’s unwavering support for these groups, saying, “As always, we will remain by the side of the sincere fighters and combatants, by God’s grace and help.”
Khamenei’s message serves as a reassurance to allies within the Axis and signals continued resistance against perceived foreign domination in the region. Despite Sinwar’s death, Khamenei emphasized a forward path for the resistance movement, projecting strength and unity amid recent losses.
