Gripping Truth: Rights Panel Demands Justice as International Law Calls for Israel to End Palestine Occupation!
The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, has outlined the responsibilities of Israel, third-party states, and the United Nations in concluding what it deems an unlawful occupation. Led by Navi Pillay, the commission emphasizes that Israel’s actions trigger responsibilities not just for itself but for all nations. According to Pillay, no state should acknowledge Israel’s territorial claims over the occupied areas. Rather, all states must differentiate their diplomatic activities, particularly by not recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital or positioning diplomatic missions there—a location claimed by Palestinians as their future state capital.
The commission insists states refrain from providing Israel with financial, military, or political support that could sustain the occupation. It underscores the role of the UN General Assembly and Security Council in determining and enacting measures to promptly cease the occupation. Citing the International Court of Justice’s advisory opinion, the commission describes Israel’s ongoing presence in the territories as unlawful. It highlights the protracted occupation as the core issue fueling the cycle of conflict and violence.
Pillay calls for international cooperation to end the occupation, urging states to act on a General Assembly resolution from September 2024 demanding Israeli withdrawal from the territories within a year. This follows a resolution from an emergency special session held on 17 September with similar mandates. Established by the UN Human Rights Council in 2021, the commission is charged with probing all alleged breaches of international law in these regions since 13 April 2021. The commission has welcomed what it describes as a historic advisory opinion from the UN’s top court, reaffirming the unlawful nature of the occupation while urging global efforts toward Palestinian self-determination.
