Urgent Appeal: Empower Delhi’s Courts with Essential Videoconferencing Technology!
The lack of essential infrastructure for videoconferencing in Delhi’s district courts is obstructing online proceedings, according to local lawyers. Since transitioning to hybrid hearings post-COVID-19—where some parties are present in court and others participate online—district courts have struggled with limited technology. Despite the Delhi High Court’s guidelines, lawyers like Advocate Anil Kumar Hajelay, who filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in 2021, express frustration at the sluggish progress. Many courtrooms still lack basic equipment such as cameras and microphones, hindering communication between in-person and virtual participants. Advocate Akash Bajpai noted the absence of microphones and visual displays, which impairs effective dialogue for remote parties. Although improvements have been noted, Advocate Tushar Sannu insists more needs to be done, urging district courts to mirror the High Court’s more advanced setup. The Delhi High Court has repeatedly directed the district courts to expedite their technological enhancements. Despite allocating an estimated ₹387 crore for necessary equipment, approval delays by the Planning and Finance Departments prompted criticism at a recent hearing. The next court session is scheduled for October 24, with potential repercussions for Delhi’s senior officials if progress remains stalled.
