Manipur MLAs Unite for Urgent Peace Talks Amid Rising Community Tensions: A Powerful Stride Towards Harmony | Guwahati News
In an effort to restore normalcy in Manipur, MLAs from the Meitei, Kuki-Zo, and Naga communities recently met with central officials in New Delhi. The meeting, initiated by the Union home ministry and attended by Water Resources Minister Awangbow Newmai, is viewed as a positive step towards peace. However, representatives from the Kuki-Zo community stressed that a separate administration is crucial for any peace dialogue. Newmai appreciated the home ministry’s efforts and emphasized the necessity of continuous dialogue to maintain peace. The opposition Congress criticized the absence of key figures, such as the Union home minister and Manipur chief minister, at the discussions. Despite these critiques, Newmai remained optimistic about future meetings, highlighting the importance of collaboration among all communities to devise comprehensive solutions.
The meeting was significant as it marked the first gathering of the three communities’ MLAs since last year’s outbreak of violence. While Kuki-Zo MLAs participated in dialogue with the Ministry of Home Affairs, they did not join the joint session with their Meitei and Naga counterparts. Observers, including the Thadou Community International, see these discussions as offering hope amidst ongoing violence. The group, representing one of Manipur’s largest Scheduled Tribes, called for an end to violence, underscoring its detrimental impact on the state. The ongoing dialogue and plans for future meetings signify a concerted effort to address the region’s complex issues and foster a lasting peace.
