Victory at Last: Empowered Workers Triumph as 37-Day Strike Ends at Samsung’s Sriperumbudur Unit
A 37-day strike by workers at Samsung Electronics’ Sriperumbudur unit concluded on Tuesday, following detailed negotiations with management and the Tamil Nadu government. The agreement includes an earlier wage hike, no disciplinary actions against striking workers, and workers’ commitment to avoid actions against the company. The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) led the strike, seeking higher wages and union recognition, the latter pending court approval. Both parties are awaiting the court’s verdict on union recognition, agreeing to resume normal operations without punitive measures against workers.
Samsung has responded by implementing a Rs 5,000 monthly “Productivity Stabilization Incentive” from October 2024 to March 2025 and expanding air-conditioned bus services to all routes. Additionally, a new “People First Promise” program will allow workers to provide feedback for workplace improvements. The Tamil Nadu government, supportive of the union registration, played a crucial mediation role, along with several ministers. The strike initially began on September 9, driven by grievances over low wages, heavy workloads, and the absence of union recognition. Despite significant concessions, wage disparities remain a point of contention, with Samsung’s Seoul employees earning substantially more than Indian workers. The CITU’s proposal for a phased wage increase to Rs 36,000 a month over three years reflects ongoing concerns.
