Exciting Showdown: 49 Dynamic Candidates Vie for Sinlung Hills Council Leadership
In Mizoram, 49 candidates from five political parties and independent candidates are set to contest the Sinlung Hills Council (SHC) elections for its 12 seats on November 5. This election sees a slight increase from the 41 candidates in the 2019 polls. Despite one BJP candidate withdrawing, the race includes a female candidate. The ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) has fielded eight candidates, including current chief executive member Lalvenhima Hmar and chairman HC Lalmalsawma. The Opposition Congress has put forward candidates for 12 seats, while the Mizo National Front (MNF) has nominated 10 candidates. The Hmar People’s Convention (HPC) has four candidates, and the BJP is contesting one seat. Additionally, there are 14 independent candidates, with two backed by the MNF.
The SHC, covering 31 villages in the Hmar-dominated northeast of Mizoram and parts of Aizawl, Kolasib, and Saitual districts, has 23,789 registered voters, including 11,914 women. Votes will be counted immediately after polls close on November 5. Formed after the 2018 peace accord between Mizoram’s government and the former underground Hmar People’s Convention (Democratic), the SHC’s political landscape has experienced shifts in power, with the current ZPM-HPC alliance in control. In the 2019 election, the MNF-HPC alliance secured 10 seats, while independents won two. This upcoming election is crucial in determining future governance and stability in the council.
