Mizoram CM Takes Bold Stand for Enhanced Agency Unity in the Battle Against Drugs
Aizawl, Oct. 14: Mizoram’s Chief Minister, Lalduhoma, has reinforced his government’s resolve to address the growing drug crisis in the state, emphasizing the necessity for improved coordination among various agencies. In a recent meeting with officials from the Excise and Narcotics Department and NGOs, he commended their persistent efforts against drug and alcohol abuse. Lalduhoma stressed the importance of fortifying the Mizoram Liquor Prohibition Act of 2019 and its 2022 rules to better tackle substance abuse.
Earlier this year in June, Lalduhoma announced the establishment of a special committee dedicated to combating the drug menace. Alarming statistics from the Foundation for Drug-free Mizoram revealed that 41 individuals succumbed to drug abuse in the first five months of this year. The foundation warns that Mizoram could witness the highest drug-related death toll in two decades, highlighting the urgent need for effective solutions.
This announcement coincides with notable drug seizures in the region. In the 7th Meeting of the State Level Narco-Coordination (NCORD) held in June, Veenu Bansal, Inspector General of Police (Intel) and head of the Anti-Narcotics Task Force, reported that from January to May 2024, drugs valued at Rs. 982.5 crore were confiscated. The crackdown led to the registration of 418 cases and the arrest of 581 individuals involved in drug activities.
As Mizoram confronts this escalating drug problem, Lalduhoma’s administration remains committed to collaborative efforts and strategic interventions aimed at safeguarding the health and future of its citizens. This comprehensive approach underscores the government’s commitment as it grapples with a crisis that demands urgent and decisive action.
