India’s Strong Stand: Uniting with UN Peacekeeping Nations to Condemn Lebanon Attacks for Unwavering Safety and Security
As tensions escalate between Israel and Hezbollah, dozens of nations contributing troops to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) have condemned recent attacks on peacekeepers in Lebanon. In a joint statement, 34 countries, including top contributors like Indonesia and Italy, expressed alarm over the targeting of UNIFIL personnel, with India voicing strong support for the statement. This comes amid reports of at least five peacekeepers being injured in the conflict, which has forced over a million people to flee since late September.
The ongoing violence follows Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah and killing at least 15 individuals. The situation threatens broader regional stability, sparking global concern. French, Italian, and Spanish leaders have specifically cited violations of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which mandates the safety of UNIFIL personnel. UNIFIL’s mission, involving approximately 9,500 soldiers from nearly 50 countries, aims to maintain peace and security in the region post the 2006 conflict.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has reiterated the need for respecting the safety of UN premises and has highlighted the concerning security situation in Lebanon, where about 900 Indian peacekeepers are currently stationed. The international community continues to monitor developments closely, underscoring the imperative of safeguarding UNIFIL’s mission to foster lasting peace in Lebanon and the broader Middle East.
