Ratan Tata, esteemed chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, a major Indian conglomerate, has passed away at the age of 86. Renowned for his transformative leadership, Ratan Tata’s significant contributions shaped both the Tata Group and the nation.
Born on December 28, 1937, in Mumbai to Naval and Sooni Tata, Ratan Tata began his schooling at Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai and later attended Bishop Cotton School in Shimla. He graduated with a degree in architecture from Cornell University in 1962. Soon after, he joined the Tata Group as an assistant in Tata Industries and quickly rose through various roles, including at Tata Steel and TCS.
In 1971, Ratan Tata was appointed director-in-charge of Nelco and joined the board of Tata Sons as a director in 1974. He completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School in 1975. By 1981, he was chairman of Tata Industries, where he played a pivotal role in transforming the company. From 1986 to 1989, he served as chairman of Air India.
Ratan Tata succeeded JRD Tata as chairman of Tata Sons in 1991, marking significant milestones like acquiring British brand Tetley in 2000 and listing TCS in 2004. Under his leadership, Tata Group acquired Corus and Jaguar Land Rover in 2007 and 2008, respectively, and launched the affordable Tata Nano.
After stepping down in December 2012, he became Tata Sons’ Chairman Emeritus, eventually involving in legal matters like the Niira Radia case in 2013. Despite Cyrus Mistry’s removal in 2016 and subsequent legal battles, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Ratan Tata in 2021. From October 2016 to February 2017, he served as interim chairman and continued investing in startups thereafter.
Ratan Tata’s legacy remains foundational to India’s industrial landscape.
