Heartfelt Farewell: Maharashtra Declares Day of Mourning as Iconic Ratan Tata is Laid to Rest
The Maharashtra government has declared a day of mourning on Thursday to honor Ratan Tata, the esteemed chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, who passed away at 86 on Wednesday. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde hailed Tata as a remarkable figure, praising his unique combination of ethical leadership and business acumen, and acknowledging his significant impact on the industry and philanthropy.
As a mark of respect, all state events scheduled for Thursday have been canceled. Moreover, government buildings across Maharashtra will fly the tricolor flag at half-mast. The public will have the opportunity to pay their final respects, as Tata’s body will be displayed at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in Nariman Point from 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM. The final rites are scheduled for 3:30 PM at the Worli crematorium, with Home Minister Amit Shah attending on behalf of the Central government.
Tata’s family has confirmed that the public viewing will occur at the NCPA Lawns. “The mortal remains of Ratan Tata will be taken to the NCPA Lawns, Nariman Point, Mumbai, at 10:30 AM on Thursday for members of the public to pay their last respects and homage,” they announced.
Chief Minister Shinde paid tribute to Tata, referring to him as a “living legend” who steered the Tata Group—a cornerstone of India’s industrial landscape—through a tradition of excellence and integrity for several decades. Shinde highlighted Tata’s decisive leadership in a tweet.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences, lauding Tata’s visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to societal betterment. “Ratan Tata Ji was a visionary business leader, a compassionate soul, and an extraordinary human being,” Modi noted, emphasizing Tata’s exceptional ability to dream big and contribute to society.
Ratan Tata’s passing marks the end of an era for Indian industry and philanthropy, leaving behind a legacy of innovation, ethics, and social responsibility.
