Victory for Heritage: HC Affirms Rani Lakshmi Bai Statue’s Installation Upholds Sacred Prayer Rights at Shahi Idgah Park
Civic agencies informed the Delhi High Court that the installation of a statue of freedom fighter Rani Lakshmi Bai at Shahi Idgah Park, Sadar Bazar, has not infringed upon the rights of those who pray there. The High Court disposed of a petition filed by the Shahi Idgah Managing Committee, which challenged the statue’s installation, claiming it was placed on Waqf Board property. The court recognized that the matter had been amicably resolved. Authorities clarified that the statue was installed in a corner of the park owned by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), following the construction of a boundary wall.
The installation by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) sparked controversy when the Idgah committee claimed it encroached upon Waqf Board land, an assertion dismissed by the High Court. The court criticized the opposition for potentially turning the issue into an unnecessary flashpoint, reprimanding the Idgah committee for “scandalous pleadings.” Furthermore, it objected to certain divisive comments made in the committee’s appeal. The court highlighted that Rani Lakshmi Bai is a national icon, emphasizing that history should not be fragmented by communal politics.
