Tragic Impact: Brahmaputra Erosion Ravages Dibrugarh, Displacing Families – Heartfelt Story from Guwahati News
Brahmaputra Erosion Devastates Dibrugarh Community: An Urgent Call for Action
In a devastating 24-hour span, relentless erosion by the Brahmaputra River swept away ten homes in Mothola, a community situated just 9 kilometers from Dibrugarh town. The erosion began early on Saturday, swallowing an estimated 110 to 120 meters of land. Mothola, home to around 554 residents in 137 houses, primarily houses people from the tea community.
Residents, including Anima Karmakar and others, stood helpless as the waters rapidly claimed their homes. "It’s like our lives have been erased overnight," Anima lamented. Desperate locals attempted to salvage belongings by dismantling their homes. Malati Urang shared her despair, "It’s heartbreaking to tear down your own home. But what choice do we have?"
The situation has generated profound local outrage due to the absence of water department officials at the scene. The erosion poses an imminent threat to other houses that teeter on the riverbank’s edge, intensifying community fears over further losses.
In a related matter, tensions have surfaced in Guravannapet, Telangana, where locals set fire to the house of a man accused of raping a minor. The 20-year-old suspect’s arrest followed violent actions by the enraged community, who also vandalized vehicles belonging to his family. This incident, fueled by social media, prompted police intervention to prevent further escalation.
These events underscore the urgent need for official intervention and solutions to the challenges facing communities affected by natural disasters and social unrest. As residents grapple with loss and uncertainty, calls for decisive action grow louder.
