Tragic Flash Floods Devastate Meghalaya: Death Toll Climbs to 15 Amid Urgent Rescue Efforts
The death toll from flash floods and landslides in Meghalaya’s South Garo Hills district has risen to 15, as relentless rainfall continues to devastate the area. Significant damage has been reported, particularly in the Gasuapara region, prompting authorities to deploy National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams for urgent search and rescue operations in severely affected locations.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has prioritized relief efforts, directing immediate ex gratia payments to the families of the victims. The tragedy has seen its most heartbreaking impact in the remote village of Hatiasia Songma, where a landslide claimed the lives of seven members of one family, including three minors; the youngest victim was just 1.5 years old. Rescue teams are still working tirelessly to recover all the bodies from the debris of the landslide.
In the Dalu area, three additional casualties were reported, where widespread flooding has caused substantial destruction. As the crisis unfolds, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has convened an emergency meeting to evaluate the situation in the Garo Hills’ five districts, expressing profound sorrow over the loss of lives and pledging swift government action to address the crisis.
The situation in South Garo Hills underscores the devastating impact of unrelenting rainfall, as families grapple with the loss and communities work towards recovery. Authorities remain vigilant, continuing to monitor weather conditions and adapting their response strategies to ensure safety and support for the affected populations.
