Shocking Assault: Former New York Governor and Stepson Attacked During Evening Walk
Former New York Governor David Paterson and his stepson, Anthony Sliwa, sustained minor injuries during an assault on a Manhattan street, the NYPD reported. The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. Friday on the Upper East Side as the 70-year-old former governor, who is legally blind, and his 20-year-old stepson were out for a walk. The attack involved four men and a woman.
Paterson and Sliwa, son of Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa, encountered some of the attackers earlier when Sliwa was walking the family dog. He warned them against scaling a building’s fire escape. The pair later confronted the group again and were attacked near East 97th Street.
Both were treated for minor facial injuries at a nearby hospital and released shortly after. Sliwa received a cut that required stitches while Paterson sustained further minor injuries on his body. The police have labeled the incident a “gang assault” and are appealing to the public for information.
Paterson, who served as the state’s first Black governor from 2008 to 2010 after succeeding Eliot Spitzer, expressed gratitude for the police’s quick response and widespread public support. Meanwhile, despite the ordeal, Paterson remained focused on New York Mets pitcher Kodai Senga’s performance in the playoff game against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Paterson attributed his and his stepson’s ability to fend off the attackers to a sense of resilience but emphasized the need for community vigilance in ensuring public safety. The couple expressed heartfelt thanks to the police and those who have extended their support following the incident.
This assault highlights ongoing safety concerns in the neighborhood, prompting authorities and residents alike to push for heightened security and community awareness in addressing such threats.
