Empowering Breakthrough: Expert Panel Takes Bold Action on Cabbies’ Demands
Expert Committee Formed to Address Tourist Taxi Demands in Meghalaya
SHILLONG, Oct 5: The Meghalaya state government has taken a proactive step to address the concerns of the All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxis Association (AKMTTA) by forming an expert committee led by Tourism Director Cyril V Diengdoh. This move comes as a response to the association’s demands for new policies regarding the operation of tourist taxis.
Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh announced that the expert committee is scheduled to convene a meeting with the AKMTTA next week. The key issue on the table is whether Meghalaya will adopt a policy similar to that of Sikkim, where tourist taxis from other states are permitted only to drop off passengers at designated points.
Minister Lyngdoh emphasized the government’s willingness to maintain an open mind while addressing these demands. "Once the talks move forward, the committee will apprise me of the possible solutions," he stated, indicating a collaborative approach to resolving the matter.
Furthermore, it was noted that representatives from various tourism sector stakeholders, including the AKMTTA, convened last week for discussions on the pressing issues within the industry. This dialogue highlights the state’s commitment to fostering a cooperative environment among tourism stakeholders to enhance the sector’s efficacy and sustainability.
The formation of this expert committee marks a significant step towards finding a balanced solution that accommodates the needs of local taxi operators while ensuring seamless transportation services for tourists visiting Meghalaya. As the discussions continue, the government aims to strike a harmonious balance that will benefit both the local economy and the tourism sector’s growth.
