Urgent Call for Justice: Uncovering the Truth Behind Ukhrul Violence and Alarming Police Arms Looting in Manipur
Manipur Congress President K Meghachandra has called for an investigation into a violent clash and subsequent looting of arms from a police station in Ukhrul district. He accused the state government of inadvertently supplying arms to miscreants by failing to secure police station armories, leading to repeated incidents of looting during violent outbreaks. Meghachandra criticized the district administration and home department for not promptly controlling the violence and demanded accountability and an inquiry into the potential intelligence failures that precipitated the unrest. He emphasized that the Congress views these occurrences as a systemic issue of armament supply rather than isolated incidents of theft.
In a related context, AICC Secretary and Manipur co-in-charge Christopher Tilak condemned the recurring violence in the state as a “man-made crisis.” He pointed out its severe impacts on Manipur’s economy, youth, agriculture, and overall social fabric. Tilak criticized the dual governance model, suggesting it is failing to function effectively in Manipur.
The violence in Ukhrul involved a mob storming a police station and seizing firearms and ammunition amid a clash over land disputes for a Swachh Bharat Mission project. The incident led to multiple casualties and injuries, prompting the imposition of curfews and internet shutdowns to maintain order. The conflict primarily involved tensions among the Naga, Meitei, and Kuki-Zo communities.
Meanwhile, in a separate violent occurrence, suspected militants attacked a village in Manipur’s Jiribam district, leading to retaliatory efforts by local volunteers and interventions by security forces. Collective evacuation measures are underway with the village repeatedly being targeted since June.
These escalating tensions underscore the urgent necessity for strategic administrative responses and comprehensive peace-building initiatives to restore stability in the affected regions.
