Unlocking Prosperity: Cabinet Streamlines Agri Schemes & Approves Ambitious Rs 10K Cr Oilseeds Mission
In a significant policy move, the Union Cabinet has streamlined 18 centrally sponsored schemes of the Agriculture Ministry, amounting to an allocation of Rs 101,321 crore, into two primary schemes: Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (PM-RKVY) and Krishonnati Yojana (KY). This consolidation is designed to offer states more flexibility to reallocate funds based on local needs and prevent duplication. The central government will contribute Rs 69,088.98 crore, while states will provide Rs 32,232.63 crore.
Additionally, the cabinet has announced a National Mission on Oilseeds with a seven-year budget of Rs 10,103 crore, aiming to boost India’s oilseed production from 39 million tonnes in 2022-23 to 69.7 million tonnes by 2030-31. The mission seeks to enhance yields from 1,353 kgs per hectare to 2,112 kgs and elevate domestic edible oil production from 12.7 million to 20.2 million tonnes in the same period, thereby reducing import dependency from 57% to 28%.
The initiative targets expanding oilseed cultivation by four million hectares and adopts strategies like high-yield seed varieties, using rice fallow lands, and promoting intercropping. It includes setting up 65 new seed hubs and 50 seed storage units, alongside launching the ‘Seed Authentication, Traceability and Holistic Inventory (SATHI)’ portal to ensure a steady seed supply. India, which began major edible oil imports in the 1990s, reached an import peak of 16.46 million tonnes valued at Rs 140,000 crore in 2022-23. The current oil year expects similar import volumes.
