Nagaland’s Factory Growth Stagnates Post-2014, Shows ASI Report
The industrial landscape of Nagaland has largely stagnated since peaking in 2014-15, as per the Annual Survey of Industries (ASI) results from 2013-14 to 2022-23. The number of factories peaked at 197 in 2014-15, and since then, fluctuated between 185 and 197. The latest ASI report for 2022-23, released by the Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), highlights a modest increase to 193 factories, up 1% from the previous year’s 191.
Despite the static growth in factory numbers, workforce engagement showed positive trends. Employment rose nearly 8% to 4,958 in 2022-23, up from 4,602 in the prior year, while total engagement grew by 7.80% to 5,764. However, these figures remain below the employment highs of 2017-18.
The ASI defines a factory based on worker count and usage of power in manufacturing, incorporating all engaged workers, including unpaid proprietors and cooperative members. From 2013-14 to 2022-23, Nagaland’s factory numbers increased by 59, rising from 134 to 193. This is in contrast to the national increase of 28,758 factories during the same period.
Nationally, ASI 2022-23 reports a substantial boost in economic parameters, with employment, invested capital, and gross value added (GVA) surpassing pre-pandemic levels. Tamil Nadu leads in factory count, while Maharashtra tops GVA rankings.
Nagaland, despite its static factory numbers, is ranked among 35 states and union territories for net value added in manufacturing. The top five states—Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh—collectively contributed over 54% of the nation’s manufacturing GVA in 2022-23, showcasing the significant industrial contributions beyond Nagaland’s borders.
