Outraged Congress MP Exposes State’s Stark Failure in Devastating Manipur Conflict
Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam Addresses Manipur’s Unrest, Urges Government to Uphold Constitutional Rights
In a heartfelt address on the Manipur issue, Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam directed his message not towards the government but to the people. He traced the origins of the ongoing armed conflict to initial unrest, followed by incidents of looting. Akoijam noted a temporary lull in violence after the first few days of May, but tensions resurfaced with clashes between Assam Rifles and Manipur police.
Highlighting a deepening divide, Akoijam pointed out that two retired officials from different security organizations were publicly opposing each other, reinforcing the narrative of Meiteis versus Kukis. He referenced Article 21 of the Indian Constitution, which guarantees the right to life, lamenting the state’s failure to protect both communities.
Stressing the state’s obligation to uphold constitutional rights, Akoijam criticized its inability to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens. In a strongly-worded appeal to Home Minister Amit Shah, he called for immediate action for the safe release of two Meitei youths abducted in Manipur, marking a concerning escalation in communal violence since May 2023.
On September 27, three men from Thoubal district were en route to New Keithelmanbi for an SSC GD recruitment test when they were allegedly abducted by suspected Kuki armed members. While Assam Rifles managed to rescue one youth, the fate of Oinam Thoithoi Singh and Thokchom Thoithoiba Meitei remains uncertain.
"How the Assam Rifles rescued only one out of the three youths traveling in the same vehicle remains a mystery," Akoijam stated in his letter. His urgent appeal underscores the critical need for decisive government intervention to defuse communal tensions and uphold the right to life for all citizens, as mandated by the Constitution.
