Bhupen Borah Confronts Himanta Biswa Sarma: Courageously Demands Truth About NRC Affidavit in Supreme Court
APCC Chief Challenges Assam CM on NRC and Criticizes BJP Policies
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) Chief Bhupen Borah has thrown down the gauntlet to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, urging him to file an affidavit in the Supreme Court concerning the National Register of Citizens (NRC). This challenge follows Sarma’s declarations during his visit to Jharkhand, where he promised the expulsion of all illegal immigrants from Assam upon the NRC’s implementation.
Borah rebuked Sarma for making bold claims outside Assam while avoiding a clear stance on the NRC at home. "If Sarma is committed to his statements, why is he reluctant to submit an affidavit to the Supreme Court?" Borah questioned. He emphasized the disparity between Sarma’s grand announcements and the ground reality in Assam, where over 32 lakh applications vie for just 12,600 jobs.
Highlighting the public’s priorities, Borah stressed that the people of Assam seek a corruption-free state and genuine development. He accused the BJP of employing diversionary tactics to mask their true intentions regarding the NRC.
Borah also addressed the controversy involving the proposed semiconductor industry in Assam. He clarified that while the Congress is not against establishing a semiconductor industry, they are concerned about the selected location, which previously housed paper mills. Borah lamented the BJP’s failure to revive the Jagiroad and Cachar paper mills, resulting in significant job losses.
On September 27, Sarma responded to criticism from Congress leader and Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge about establishing semiconductor units in Assam and Gujarat. Sarma accused the Congress of opposing northeastern development, urging Assam Congress leaders to support the state’s growth.
Kharge retaliated by pointing out the imbalance in semiconductor manufacturing locations. He argued that Assam lacks the necessary infrastructure for such industries, suggesting political motives behind the government’s decision to push for these units outside Karnataka.
In summary, Borah’s challenge and criticism spotlight the ongoing political tussle between the BJP and Congress over the NRC and regional development policies.
