Urgent Cry for Action: Truckers & Rails in a High-Stakes Race to Move Billions in Cargo
Shipping containers were stacked at the Port of Mobile in Alabama ahead of a potential strike by the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) set to start after midnight on Monday. This strike threatens major ports along the East and Gulf Coasts, disrupting trade and potentially damaging the U.S. economy.
ImportGenius data revealed that 54,456 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) worth about $2.7 billion arrived on Friday at ports under a master contract expiring Monday. For the weekdays between Sept. 23-27, 273,417 TEUs valued at approximately $13.67 billion were processed. Alan Baer, CEO of OL USA, stressed the urgency for importers to clear their containers to avoid delays.
A strike could significantly impact the U.S. economy, blocking hundreds of thousands of containers and affecting refrigerated produce. The Biden administration has urged both parties to reach a fair agreement. However, no negotiations were planned before the deadline.
ILA President Harold Daggett warned of worker slowdowns if the strike is enforced using the Taft-Hartley Act, which allows a temporary suspension of strikes. The ILA suspended talks in June over automation and wage issues, signaling a strike intention.
A port shutdown could escalate inflation and consumer prices, impacting former President Donald Trump’s campaign on economic issues. Ocean carriers might profit from rising freight rates and fees on stranded containers, potentially increasing by 20%-50%.
The Port of New York/New Jersey, the largest on the East Coast, observed significant imports, including goods from major retailers like Walmart and Walgreens. A strike could cost the U.S. economy tens of billions of dollars, with daily impacts at individual ports reaching up to $641 million.
With East Coast ports expected to handle 2.3 million TEUs in October, the disruption could affect the cost and availability of apparel, footwear, and other goods. Importers are advised to expedite container clearance to avoid excessive charges during the strike.
