Jubilant BJP Triumphs in Securing Final Delhi Civic Body Seat Amidst AAP and Congress Boycott
BJP Wins MCD Standing Committee Seat Unopposed Amid AAP Boycott
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured the last vacant seat on the Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s (MCD) 18-member Standing Committee, as Councillor Sunder Singh Tanwar was felicitated by BJP State President Virendra Sachdeva for winning all 115 votes from the party’s councillors. The opposition’s candidate, AAP’s Nirmala Kumari, received no votes due to a boycott by AAP and Congress councillors, citing an illegal voting process.
The BJP now holds 10 seats in the committee, while AAP retains eight. The standing committee serves as the highest decision-making body in Delhi’s civic administration.
AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal accused the BJP of manipulating the MCD processes and contravening governance norms. He argued that only the mayor has the authority to convene MCD House meetings, but the lieutenant governor altered this by assigning the task to an additional commissioner. Amid accusations of "hooliganism" directed at the BJP, Kejriwal maintained that AAP councillors would only participate in the officially scheduled poll on October 5.
The election was initially set for Thursday but was delayed due to protests and adjourned by Mayor Shelly Oberoi, who argued councillors should bring mobile phones into the voting hall. The election proceeded on Friday under the instruction of LG V K Saxena, leading to further AAP refusals to participate.
The seat became available following BJP councillor Kamaljeet Sehrawat’s election as Lok Sabha MP from West Delhi.
