Crucial and Hopeful: Assam and Meghalaya Set to Continue Historic Border Talks This October
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has confirmed that the ongoing border negotiations between Assam and Meghalaya will continue, with the next round of talks scheduled for October. The decision aims to resolve longstanding border disputes between the two states.
During a recent media briefing, Sangma stressed the importance of sustained dialogue. “We have had regular official meetings and personal discussions with Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma. We’ve decided to continue the dialogue and meet again, likely in October,” he said. Sangma pointed out that the negotiations would cover six particularly sensitive areas: Langpih, Borduar, Nongwah-Mawtamur, Deshdoomreah, Block-I & II, and Khanduli-Psiar. These regions have been contentious for years, and Sangma acknowledged the complex nature of resolving disputes in these areas.
Both state governments have expressed their commitment to proceed with caution due to the sensitive nature of the issues at hand. The initial phase of talks successfully settled six out of twelve disputed areas. The upcoming discussions aim to address the more challenging disputes, with a focus on detailed negotiations.
Regional committees from Assam and Meghalaya have undertaken inspections of the disputed territories to ensure informed discussions. This groundwork is expected to facilitate progress in the upcoming talks.
The renewed commitment to dialogue reflects both states’ dedication to resolving these complex boundary issues, setting a hopeful tone for the October negotiations.
