Alarming Second Mpox Case in Kerala: UAE Returnee Urgently Admitted to Kochi Hospital
Kerala has reported its second monkeypox (Mpox) case following a positive test result from a man who recently returned from abroad. The individual, who traveled back from the UAE, has been admitted to a private hospital in Kochi and is currently in stable condition. According to state Health Minister Veena George, a contact list has been prepared and preventive measures are in place. Isolation facilities have been set up across all districts, and the health department is urging symptomatic individuals to seek treatment.
This comes after India’s first case of the Clade 1b Mpox strain was detected on September 23 in a 38-year-old man from Malappuram, Kerala, who also returned from the UAE. The World Health Organization declared Mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern last year, and since then, India has reported 30 cases.
On September 26, the Union Health Ministry issued an advisory to all states and union territories, mandating that public health preparedness at health facilities be assessed and reviewed by senior officials at both state and district levels. The ministry outlined critical public health actions to prevent and mitigate the spread of Mpox within the country.
Mpox infections are generally self-limiting, lasting two to four weeks, and are managed with supportive medical care. The virus spreads through prolonged close contact with an infected person and typically presents with symptoms such as fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes. Complications can arise, further emphasizing the need for timely medical attention and preventive action.
