UPCA Triumphantly Quells Safety Concerns: Green Park Stadium Perfectly Poised for India-Bangladesh Test
Kanpur, Sep 26: Green Park Stadium Ready for India-Bangladesh Test Amid Safety Assurances
As the Indian cricket team prepares to face Bangladesh in the second Test at Kanpur’s historic Green Park Stadium, the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) has addressed safety concerns regarding the C Balcony. UPCA officials have refuted claims of structural risk, ensuring that comprehensive safety measures have been implemented.
Reports indicated that the C Balcony, normally accommodating 10,000 spectators, was feared to be compromised. In response, the UPCA consulted experts from the Public Works Department (PWD) and Harcourt Butler Technical University. Following inspections, the UPCA decided to reduce the balcony’s capacity to 7,200 seats, refraining from selling tickets for the remaining 2,800 as a precaution.
UPCA’s venue director, Sanjay Kapoor, assured, "It’s all baseless rumours that there is a safety concern for the fans." Kapoor highlighted fan safety as paramount, also noting overall seating capacity improvements with 26,007 seats now available, up by almost 6,000 from the last match. Additionally, the UPCA has allocated 3,000 seats daily for school students to foster young cricket enthusiasts.
Kapoor confirmed the stadium’s floodlights are fully operational and all systems have been checked to handle adverse weather conditions. The PWD initially found the balcony "unsafe for a full capacity crowd" but agreed to the reduced seating strategy.
Established in 1945, Green Park Stadium is one of India’s oldest cricket venues. It hosted its first Test in 1952 and has witnessed numerous iconic matches. Historically holding 32,000 seats, renovation efforts have modified the capacity over the years. This Test marks a "re-launch" of the venue, with Kapoor promising all efforts to ensure the match’s success.
Under an agreement with Uttar Pradesh Sports Directorate, UPCA manages the stadium, paying an annual rent of Rs 1.25 crore. For this Test, the UPCA will cover an Rs 18 lakh bill as part of the arrangement.
Fans can look forward to an exciting and safe cricketing event, with meticulous preparations signaling a promising encounter at Green Park.
