Urgent Plea for Sudan Crisis: Global Leaders Rally at UN General Assembly for Immediate Action and Hope
Nearly 18 months into the conflict between rival militaries in Sudan, over 10 million people have been displaced, with children constituting half of the displaced populace. Joyce Msuya, Acting Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, stated that Sudan’s people have suffered immensely, with countless lives lost, communities displaced, and widespread human rights violations including rape and severe abuse. The UN stresses the urgency for decisive international intervention, increased humanitarian access, and sustained efforts to end the war.
UN-led peace discussions in Switzerland in August brought commitments to facilitate aid through Chad and Port Sudan, yet violence rages on. Sudan now faces the world’s largest hunger crisis, with nearly 26 million people acutely hungry. The World Food Programme has highlighted the dire need for immediate aid to prevent mass casualties. Famine has been confirmed in North Darfur’s Zamzam camp, and millions of children and women are acutely malnourished.
The healthcare system and essential services in Sudan have been devastated, exacerbating the spread of diseases like cholera. Education for children has been disrupted for the second consecutive year. UN agencies report heightened sexual and gender-based violence, further endangering civilians.
Efforts to ramp up lifesaving assistance are hindered by restricted aid access and severe underfunding. Of the $2.7 billion needed to support 14.7 million people, only 49 percent is funded. Similarly, a $1.5 billion appeal to aid 3.3 million Sudanese refugees in neighboring countries is just 25 percent funded. UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, emphasized the need for global support to aid displaced populations and ultimately achieve peace.
The emergency’s ramifications will be discussed at the UN General Assembly, co-hosted by OCHA, UNHCR, and key international stakeholders. The assembly’s purpose is to rally for an intensified humanitarian response and a peaceful resolution to the crisis. WFP spokesperson Leni Kinzli called for urgent collective action to prevent widespread starvation. The assembly meeting will be livestreamed from 10am EST/4pm CET.
