Empowering Assam: 16th Finance Commission’s Crucial Four-Day Tour to Tackle Monetary Challenges
The 16th Finance Commission team commenced a four-day tour of Assam on September 25 to address financial matters. Led by Arvind Panagariya, the delegation will consult with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, other ministers, and top government officials. Their visit aims to discuss the allocation of tax revenues between the Centre and the states, as well as among the states.
Upon arrival in Guwahati, several commission members and their families visited the Kamakhya temple and the State Cancer Institute at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital. Starting September 26, the Commission will engage in a series of meetings at the Secretariat complex, beginning with discussions involving the Chief Minister, his cabinet, the chief secretary, and other senior officials.
In addition to meeting the government, the commission will also consult various political parties, representatives of rural and urban local bodies, different councils, and industries. A press conference is scheduled for Thursday to address the media.
On the third day, the delegation will tour Kaziranga National Park, Tata’s semiconductor unit site at Jagiroad, and other key locations. Notably, the Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve is slated to reopen for tourists on October 1, following the monsoon break. After their visit to Kaziranga, the team will depart for Shillong.
Set up by the President, the Finance Commission’s primary role is to recommend the distribution of tax revenues. The Arvind Panagariya-led 16th Finance Commission is expected to present its recommendations by October 31, 2025.
