"Nirmala Sitharaman’s Impactful Visit to Uzbekistan: Strengthening Economic Bonds at AIIB Annual Meeting"
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is set to embark on an official visit to Uzbekistan from September 24-28 to participate in the 9th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), according to reports from PTI. The AIIB meeting will take place on September 25-26 in Samarkand, featuring delegates from approximately 80 countries along with various international organizations.
During her visit, Sitharaman, in her capacity as the Indian Governor to the AIIB, will engage in multilateral discussions addressing a wide array of global issues pertinent to development agendas. As the second-largest shareholder of AIIB, India’s role in these discussions is significant.
In addition to attending the AIIB meeting, Sitharaman is scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with her counterparts from Uzbekistan, Qatar, and China, and also meet the AIIB President. Her itinerary includes a visit to Samarkand State University and the Lal Bahadur Shastri Monument in Tashkent. Furthermore, she will engage with the Indian diaspora in Uzbekistan, who play key roles across various sectors.
The AIIB focuses on developing sustainable infrastructure across Asia, aiming to promote investments in productive sectors to foster economic growth, enhance infrastructure connectivity, and create wealth.
This visit underscores India’s commitment to international cooperation in infrastructure development and its active participation in multilateral financial institutions.
