David Gilmour Opens Up: Why Pink Floyd Drama is ‘Totally Irrelevant’ to Music Legacy
David Gilmour has unveiled his new album, “Luck and Strange,” marking his first release in years and initiating his first tour since 2016. In an interview with Andy Greene, featured on Rolling Stone Music Now, Gilmour reflects on the possibility of this being his final tour. “It could be, obviously,” he admits, noting the album’s themes of mortality, co-written with his wife Polly Samson. Gilmour is candid about his awareness of the frequent loss of musicians from his generation, though he lightens the mood by saying, “I’m still here.”
Throughout the interview, Gilmour delves into details about creating the new album, expresses his exhaustion with past drama involving former Pink Floyd bandmate Roger Waters, and more. Interestingly, Gilmour’s U.S. tour includes a date at New York’s Madison Square Garden on the night of the presidential election, a coincidence he clearly did not plan. He quips, “I wish I’d known about the election-night date before we book those dates.” While expressing a desire for governments run by mature leaders, he acknowledges the recent elections in the U.K. and extends a wish for similar progress in the U.S.
Regarding the possibility of a Pink Floyd biopic, Gilmour hasn’t pondered it much, stating, “No one has really suggested it.” He finds the idea inconceivable and hasn’t given it a second thought.
Additionally, Gilmour is eager to detach from the Pink Floyd catalog due to the ongoing disputes and decision-making involved. He calls it his “dream” to be free from such entanglements. His long-standing friction with Waters is something he dismisses as “boring” and irrelevant now, indicating he might discuss it someday but not currently.
