City Shines: CS Transforms Police Bazar with Exciting Revamp!
Chief Secretary Inspects Police Bazar in Shillong; Promises Improvements
SHILLONG, Sep 16: Chief Secretary DP Wahlang, accompanied by officials from Urban Affairs and the Public Works Department (PWD), inspected the bustling Police Bazar area on Monday. This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to enhance urban infrastructure and the quality of life in Shillong’s busiest commercial hub.
During the inspection, Wahlang and the team engaged with local residents who voiced concerns about various infrastructure issues, including the deteriorating state of tiles in the market, a safety hazard first laid over a decade ago. Officials assured residents that repairs to the road interlock pavers would be completed before Christmas this year.
Another significant concern raised involved the unsightly and dangerous overhead cables for water, electricity, and internet services. In response, officials announced the installation of ducts to house these utilities, promising a more organised and safer environment.
Security was another focus of the visit. Residents were informed that the number of CCTV cameras in the area would be increased to enhance safety. Additionally, Police Community meetings are planned to strengthen ties between law enforcement and the community.
The issue of hawkers was also discussed, with government authorities affirming that a relocation plan for registered hawkers is in place. These hawkers will soon be moved to designated areas, reducing congestion in the marketplace.
On the subject of transforming Police Bazar into a pedestrian-only zone, residents expressed support but requested that their input be considered before any final decision is made. Given the presence of school-going children, elderly family members, and sick individuals in the area, access remains a critical concern for many residents.
These inspections and subsequent promises from officials indicate a move towards a more organised, safe, and livable environment in Police Bazar, much to the anticipation of its residents.
