In a significant operation on Sunday night, the Mankachar police in Assam detained five Bangladeshi nationals during a routine naka search on Mirjumla Road in the South Salmara Mankachar district, near the Assam-Meghalaya border.
The incident occurred around 9 PM as authorities intercepted a tempo carrying the individuals from Meghalaya towards Mankachar. Upon further verification, it was found that the group comprised three women and two men. Investigations revealed that the detained individuals had illegally crossed into India via the Dalu region of Meghalaya.
The arrested Bangladeshis were identified as Akash Hussain, Shafiqul Mondal, Sabina Aftan, Santa Begum, and Pinky Akhtara. Concurrently, the tempo driver, identified as Akhirul Islam from Pesarkandi village under the Mankachar police station, was also detained. The tempo, with registration number AS-17C-3808, was seized by the authorities.
Law enforcement agencies are delving into the circumstances surrounding their illegal entry and are exploring any potential links to broader networks involved in cross-border movements. The Superintendent of Police for the South Salmara Mankachar district has reached the Mankachar police station and initiated interrogation procedures with the detained individuals.
This incident underscores the Mankachar police’s ongoing efforts to enhance border security and curb illegal immigration. Heightened vigilance along the Assam-Meghalaya border continues to be a priority to ensure the security and integrity of the region.
