Urgent Call to Action: Tripura CM Urges Swift Flood Damage Assessment to Aid Recovery Efforts
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has issued a directive to expedite the final damage assessment report following the recent devastating floods between August 19 and 23. The floods, which claimed 36 lives and affected approximately 14 lakh people, have prompted the administration to prepare a comprehensive memorandum to be submitted to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) by the end of the week.
In a review meeting with all secretaries to evaluate the post-flood situation and ongoing restoration efforts, Saha stressed the urgency of finalizing the damage assessment. Revenue Secretary Brijesh Pandey, addressing a press conference, stated that the chief minister has ordered prompt ex gratia payments to the families of the deceased and compensation for those with damaged houses. So far, compensation has been disbursed to 26 of the 36 families who lost members, with efforts underway to complete the process.
Currently, 3,873 flood-affected individuals are housed in 67 relief camps, receiving essential services such as food, drinking water, and medical care from the district administration. Pandey assured that financial constraints are not hindering the restoration work or assistance efforts. He affirmed that sufficient funds are available for rehabilitation, noting that aid provision has already started for those whose homes were damaged.
The Chief Minister also announced a Rs 564 crore special package aimed at restoring physical infrastructure and aiding flood victims. Former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, however, voiced concerns over the insufficiency of funds to manage the crisis. He urged Saha to advocate for immediate financial aid from the Centre and suggested that a delegation, including opposition representatives, should visit Delhi to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
Sarkar highlighted the unprecedented scale of the calamity, stating that many flood victims, particularly farmers and livestock-dependent individuals, have yet to receive compensation and continue to face significant hardships.
