Tensions Flare in Nagamangala: Violent Clashes During Ganpati Visarjan Lead to Section 144 Imposition
Tension erupted in Nagamangala, Mandya district, Karnataka, on Wednesday following clashes between two groups during the Ganpati Visarjan procession. According to PTI, the unrest began when stones were allegedly hurled at the procession. In response, authorities invoked Section 144 in the area to prevent further violence.
Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy condemned the incident on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), criticizing the violence that marred the Ganpati Visarjan. “I strongly condemn the incident in Nagamangala. The attack on peaceful devotees with stones, slippers, and petrol bombs, along with brandishing weapons, is a significant failure of local peace and order,” he wrote. Kumaraswamy also criticized the local police’s handling of the situation and accused the ruling Congress government of enabling the incident through policies of appeasement for political gain.
Kumaraswamy called for immediate steps to restore peace and emphasized the importance of public cooperation. He urged the government to ensure that peace is swiftly restored and criticized any political exploitation of the incident.
The Nagamangala clashes come on the heels of a similar episode in Surat, Gujarat, where violence broke out after stones were thrown at a Lord Ganesha idol at a pandal. Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi confirmed the arrest of six individuals involved in the stone-pelting along with 27 others who incited the violence.
The incidents highlight ongoing tensions during religious processions and underscore the need for effective law enforcement and community cooperation to maintain peace.
