Manipur CM Urgently Seeks Unified Command in Emotional Plea to Governor Amid Recent Violence
Manipur CM N Biren Singh Meets Governor Amid Rising Violence
Guwahati: In response to escalating violence in Manipur, Chief Minister N Biren Singh, along with approximately 20 MLAs, met Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at Raj Bhawan in Imphal on Sunday morning. This marks their second meeting within 24 hours after fresh clashes in Jiribam district resulted in six fatalities on Saturday.
The hour-long meeting, which also witnessed the participation of Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh, is believed to have focused on transferring the unified command’s leadership to the state government. Normally led by the CM, the unified command coordinates operations between central forces and the state police. However, since the violence erupted in May last year, the Centre appointed former CRPF Director General Kuldiep Singh as a security adviser and head of the unified command.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh reportedly submitted a memorandum to the governor, emphasizing the state government’s demand to end the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with Kuki insurgent groups, initially signed in 2008. The memorandum also likely called for a unified command under the CM’s control and rejected demands for a separate administration by the Kuki-Zo groups, to preserve Manipur’s territorial integrity.
Since the start of the month, the state has witnessed increased violence, causing nine deaths. The recent violence has seen the use of drones dropping explosives in civilian areas, prompting Meitei organizations to demand the resignation of the security adviser and the Director General of Police for failing to ensure safety.
In a related development on Saturday, a gunfight between two communities in Jiribam district left six dead, followed by a suspected militant rocket attack in Bishnupur district that killed a priest and injured five others.
The Kuki Students’ Organization has also issued a statement demanding the classification of Arambai Tenggol and Meitei Leepun as unlawful organizations.
In summary, Manipur faces a serious security crisis, with state leadership urging the return of control over unified command to curb the violence.
