Miraculous Rescue: Two Mizo Teens Freed from Chin Militants After Assam Rifles’ Heroic Intervention
In a successful rescue effort, the Assam Rifles confirmed the liberation of two Mizo teenagers, aged 15 and 16, who had been abducted by the Hualngoram faction of the Chin Defence Force (CDF) in Mizoram’s Champhai district, near the Myanmar border. The boys, from Zokhawthar village, were captured while heading to Rih Dil Lake on September 1, following a prior conflict between Zokhawthar youths and Chin militants. They were intercepted while traveling on Chinese-made Kenbo motorcycles with three others, who managed to escape.
The teenagers endured severe mistreatment, including having their heads shaved, cigarette burns inflicted on their bodies, and the forcible removal of one boy’s teeth. Initially held near Rih Dil Lake for two days, they were then moved to a CDF camp in Seik village, Myanmar, on September 3.
The Assam Rifles intervened, applying pressure on both the Chin National Army and the CDF Hualngoram faction, which led to the release of the boys on September 6. The operation concluded with their safe return to Mizoram, marking a significant relief for their families and the local community.
The incident provoked strong reactions from Zokhawthar residents, who highlighted the hospitality shown by Mizoram residents to Myanmar refugees during times of crisis. There is a growing demand from locals for enhanced protective measures for Mizo citizens residing in volatile border areas.
This event underscores the urgent need for strengthened security protocols in border regions to prevent such abductions and ensure the safety of citizens. The Assam Rifles’ decisive action has been widely appreciated, yet the incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing tensions and dangers in the frontier areas.
