TSMC’s Groundbreaking MBBS Program Launch: Revolutionizing Medical Education
AGARTALA: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced the approval for the state’s first private medical college, TSMC, in Ranirkhamar, West Tripura, which will commence its MBBS course in the academic year 2024-25. The college is set to admit 150 students, pending approval from the National Medical Council and affiliation with Tripura University. Notably, 50 percent of these seats are reserved for local students to address the rising demand for home-grown medical professionals.
However, the initiative has sparked considerable controversy. The proposed fee structure, reportedly around Rs 1 crore, has drawn criticism for being excessively high. Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman voiced concerns, arguing that such costs could prohibit many deserving students from pursuing their medical dreams. He described the fees as exorbitant and a barrier to aspiring doctors during a session of the state assembly.
Joining the dissent, opposition leader Jitendra Chaudhury questioned the transparency of the college’s approval process. Chaudhury suggested that the licensing might not have undergone sufficient scrutiny and called for the government to clarify the procedures ensuring the granting of the license was non-oppressive. He specifically demanded transparency regarding how the trust managing the college was chosen.
In defense, Chief Minister Saha elaborated on the government’s policy to foster private investment in Tripura. He assured that the trust behind TSMC underwent a thorough screening, including financial viability assessments. Saha emphasized the need for a conducive environment to attract businesses to the state.
To support the new college, Saha announced that space at IGM Hospital has been allocated for clinical practice, addressing training challenges for students. He also pledged ongoing monitoring and periodic reviews to swiftly resolve any issues affecting the college’s operation.
This significant development in Tripura’s educational landscape promises to address local healthcare demands while stirring political debate over affordability and transparency.
