Remarkable Triumph: TBM Tunga Shatters Records with 936.6-Meter Tunnel Breakthrough in Bengaluru
Breakthrough for TBM Tunga on Namma Metro’s Pink Line
Bangalore, September 4: The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited’s (BMRCL) Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Tunga achieved a significant milestone, completing a crucial 936.6-metres stretch between Kadugondanahalli station and Nagawara station’s South Cut and Cover Shaft. This marks a major advancement for the city’s Namma Metro project.
Tunga commenced its tunnelling journey on February 3 and, as of this breakthrough, a substantial 98% (20,582.7 metres) of the total 20,992 metres of tunnelling work has been completed, announced BMRCL officials.
In July, TBM Tunga made headlines by setting a new record on the Pink Line, tunnelling 308 metres between K.G. Halli and the Nagawara retrieval shaft, surpassing the previous record held by TBM Urja, which covered 273 metres between Cantonment and Pottery Town in May 2022.
Out of the nine TBMs deployed by BMRCL for the expansive tunnelling project in Bengaluru, eight—Urja, Varada, Avni, Lavi, Vindhya, Vamika, Rudra, and Tunga—have now completed their assignments. Only Bhadra remains active, currently tunnelling a 939-metre stretch between K.G. Halli and Nagawara.
This breakthrough serves as a testament to the progress and efficiency of the Namma Metro project, bringing Bengaluru closer to enhanced urban connectivity.
