Urgent Call for Justice: Kolkata Erupts in Anger Over Police Chief’s Role in Ex-Principal’s Shocking Arrest
Protesting Junior Doctors Demand Resignation of Kolkata Police Commissioner Over Handling of Rape and Murder Case
Kolkata, Sep 2: In the wake of the arrest of Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, by the CBI, junior doctors and medical students continue to demand the resignation of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal. The protest stems from dissatisfaction with the Kolkata Police’s initial investigation into the rape and murder of a junior doctor on the hospital premises last month.
Following the incident, the Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation from the Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), citing inadequate handling. Despite this, protesters maintain that the Police Commissioner should take responsibility for the perceived failures.
A junior doctor at the sit-in on Central Avenue stated, “The arrest of Sandip Ghosh is our moral victory. But our protest demanding the resignation of the city police commissioner will continue.”
Criticism of the police’s role arose because they focused on the arrest of a civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy, as the main suspect, while ignoring suspicions directed at Sandip Ghosh. The police also faced backlash for summoning individuals, including YouTubers and doctors Kunal Ghosh and Subrana Goswami, over their social media criticisms, which many saw as attempts to suppress dissent.
Moreover, police press conferences attempting to justify their actions only fueled public anger. Legal experts questioned why Kolkata Police felt the need to defend themselves after the case was handed over to the CBI.
Attempts at negotiation between protesting junior doctors and police officials on Monday failed. The protesters, demanding either a procession to the Kolkata Police headquarters for a memorandum submission or the Police Commissioner’s personal acceptance of the memorandum, refused to end their demonstration until their demands are met. One protest organizer stated, “We are ready to continue with our demonstration indefinitely, even without water and food.”
The protest highlights ongoing tensions between the medical fraternity and law enforcement, with a clear call for accountability in handling sensitive cases. (IANS)
